Two costs are involved with Pap tests - the doctor's consultation fee and the laboratory fee (to get the cells taken during the Pap test assessed). Some doctors, clinics and health centres 'bulk bill' and if so, there are no out-of-pocket expenses for women.
If a fee is charged, the cost to you will be the difference between the Medicare rebate and the doctor and laboratory fees. In some cases you may be required to pay the full cost for the consultation and laboratory fee and then claim the rebate from Medicare.
Ask what the cost will be when you make your appointment. To find clinics near you that bulk bill, visit our online directory.
Lucy's story
I've always been very aware of the importance of regular Pap tests, as my Mum had early-stage cervical cancer in her 30s.
She encouraged me to start having regular Pap tests when I turned 18 and I followed her advice, albeit begrudgingly!
